Species placed in the genus Goniothorax are most often found under bark of Cheirodendron or by beating dead Cheirodendron trunks at dusk. They are rarely taken under bark of the related tree Tetraplasandra. A few species can be collected on ferns, most commonly on Molokai and Big Island. They can also be collected at lights. They are limited to Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and the Big Island. The name refers to the tarpazoidal form of the pronotum of many of the included species.
